GUITAR BY C.F. MARTIN, NEW YORK, Ca. 1845-50.
This guitar is a very early X-braced model 2-24. It is virtually identical to the Martin & Coupa guitar shown on page 20 of Gruhn & Carter’s “Acoustic Guitars”.
2 piece belly of pine with an early form of scolloped X-bracing. Back and sides of highly figured Rio rosewood, cedar neck and head, houndstooth purfling to the rosette, diamond purfling to the back centre join and tail joint of sides. Centre joint repaired below the bridge, 2 minor cracks to the back, retains its original silver bar frets, nickel silver nut and case. The treble side machinehead was reconstructed from period parts as part of the restoration. A wonderful warm, powerful tone and perfect neck and action.
